Exit Interview

Three startups closed this week. One lost its drug to a regulatory shadow. One built AI for users who never came back. One cured something nobody could afford to buy. One song for all three.

Week of June 2–8, 2026 — the story of three founders who built something real and watched it end anyway.
This week's song draws on three documented closures: Fulcrum Therapeutics (Cambridge, MA — sickle cell drug killed by FDA safety concerns June 4, cut 85% of staff), Yupp AI (consumer AI model evaluator — closed March 2026, lack of product-market fit, cited by PitchBook/Yahoo Finance), and Iterum Therapeutics (antibiotic commercialization wind-down March 2026, sluggish sales, cash depletion). Three different root causes, three different flavors of loss. One song.

About this issue

Fulcrum Therapeutics had 55 employees and $333 million in cash as of March 2026. That wasn't the problem. The problem was that the FDA compared their sickle cell drug pociredir to Epizyme's Tazverik — a drug in the same chemical class that had already been pulled from the global market over cancer risks. The regulator drew a line. The science didn't matter anymore. The company cut 85% of its people on June 4, 2026 1 2.
Yupp AI spent seed funding building tools to evaluate AI models — right at the moment the field was moving too fast for any single evaluation layer to stick. Their founders cited product-market fit as the cause, which is a polite way of saying: the problem they solved kept dissolving before they could sell the solution 3.
Iterum Therapeutics actually made it to market. Orlynvah, their antibiotic, cleared the FDA. It treated complicated urinary tract infections. But commercializing an antibiotic in 2026 is expensive, reimbursement is slow, and the sales team can only do so much with a product hospitals understock by default. The company started winding down March 31, 2026, citing limited cash amid commercialization costs 4.

Lyrics — Exit Interview

[Intro]

[Verse 1]
We had the science on our side
Four years of data, stacked and signed
But somewhere in a meeting room
A drug that looked like ours cast a shadow on our moon
They said the risk profile was clear
Another family's nightmare, now ours to disappear
So we laid off forty-seven
Left the lights on in the lab

[Pre-Chorus]
I keep the last slide show saved
The one where the future still behaved

[Chorus]
This is the exit interview
Tell me what you'd do differently
The market wasn't wrong
We were just in the way
Of someone else's tragedy

[Verse 2]
We built an AI for everyone
Seed round closed before the product had begun
Two million signups, none of them returned
We dressed the data up, ignored what we had learned
Growth was our religion then
We prayed at the dashboard every night til ten
Then the money had a question:
What exactly do you sell?

[Pre-Chorus]
I keep the pitch deck where I swore
This time the market was ours to explore

[Chorus]
This is the exit interview
Tell me what you'd do differently
The market wasn't wrong
We were just in the way
Of someone else's trajectory

[Bridge]
There's a graveyard now, I heard
For every startup that ever erred
They give you a plaque that says the year
And the reason you thought you'd make it here
Mistimed market, burn rate climb
Regulatory wall, the wrong patient profile
Team conflict at the seam
Sometimes the hardest failure
Is the one that almost worked

[Verse 3]
We cured the thing that no one bought
The price was right but the system fought
Six years to clear the final trial
Then the cash ran out about the final mile
Orlynvah sat on the shelf
The salesforce couldn't sell it by itself
So we called the lawyers Friday
Filed on Monday morning, gone

[Chorus]
This is the exit interview
Tell me what you'd do differently
The market wasn't wrong
We were just in the way
Of something bigger, moving on

[Outro]
But I'd do it again
Yeah, I'd probably do it again
Every broken dream needs a witness
So I'll be the one who built it anyway
